  8. hot take that should not be hot: apes deserve legal personhood status with a guardianship system for captive apes and property rights to land inhabited by wild apes, with legal representation for safety and living conditions of captive and wild apes and armed rangers for wild apes paid for by a fund financed through zoo admissions and wilderness tourism. wilderness tourism financing conservation is already working well for mountain gorillas in the DRC, it has contributed to their wild population rebounding from what looked like a path to extinction. but it's still unreasonable for people to legally own apes at all, because apes are people.

  9. in reality, jaguars are known for only rarely attacking humans, whereas leopards punch well above their weight class and achieve the most human kills after tigers. an individual leopard ranks in second place for human kills of any man-eating cat in modern times (around 400). a weird thing about that is that leopards vary greatly in size across their huge range throughout most of africa into south asia, and the ones that frequently kill humans are the smaller leopards in asia, which are like half the size of a mountain lion.
