I would guess that he does have some kind of mental disorder that's not normally very noticeable (though I wonder if there is something of the sort that occurs in other mammals with outward-turned eyes like those) which, largely temporarily, got a lot worse through the combination of malnutrition and solitary confinement - in humans as well, some types of malnutrition can cause or worsen psychiatric symptoms, and solitary confinement commonly does as well, which is why past a few weeks, it is generally considered to be torture. obviously the US has its very own definition of a whole list of things that are not torture when the US does it, and america keeps an uncommonly high percentage of the huge percentage of its population that's incarcerated in solitary confinement long-term or permanently.
