I would absolutely not have thought that bats carry their babies in flight much. I thought they left them hanging in the colony cave.

flying foxes are not one species, the name is used for 61 species in two genera. and many other fruit bats outside of those two genera also are cute. it's mostly the big eyes that make the difference, and it helps that fruit bats tend to have noses and ears that more closely resemble other mammals because they're not intricately evolved for super precise echolocation.

rehabbing bats is brave, considering that they are the animals most likely to have various extremely deadly human-transmissable diseases, only possibly rivalled by primates. australian fruitbats specifically are known to transmit at least two very deadly viruses to humans. one is a lyssavirus that is only known to have infected three humans (all died), so it is thought to not be very transmissable, though one case was a wildlife caregiver, and the other two were even lesser contact incidents than are to be expected for a rehabilitator, in which people had very brief contact with a bat and got scratched. the other one is called hendra virus, it's best known for infecting horses through bat poop and killing 75% of them, but has also infected humans more often than the lyssavirus, and killed 60% of those.
