  1. it doesn't really make women safer, but when there's nobody else around and at night in particular, I try to avoid walking behind women to not make them nervous. I walk fast, so normally I try to get in front of them without getting too close and then increase the distance by walking normaally. I've even switched to the other side of the road sometimes to avoid following a woman or slowly creeping up behind her. it's mostly because I get anxious at the thought of being perceived as a threat, but I think the effort on my part is proportionate to the benefit in some situations, at least if the woman is similarly neurotic as I am.
