I agree. ever since they started talking about nukes, I have thought that crimea is the only ukrainian territory that russia may possibly defend with nukes. the reason why is that crimea is the only annexed territory that the russian public cares about and really sees as russian land, rather than some foreign warzone. because that's what the public cares about, keeping crimea is the most important part of this war for putin to keep his hold on power. really,russian public opinion is driving this war way more than russians or western commentators like to admit. "putin's war" my ass, this war exists because the russian people have always rewarded putin's military aggressions with increased popularity. especially the annexation of crimea. they have no problemat all with russian nuclear threata either - any posturing and violence is fine, as long as they can be made to believe that it benefits russia.
