  1. british intelligence services recently confirmed the russian use of barrier troops (units stationed behind the front to kill soldiers deserting or retreating without orders), and I'm starting to believe it, too. I think that might be a very bad idea for the russians to do in a war in which the enemy is happy to take prisoners, and captivity is extremely survivable and certainly more comfortable than front line duty. in past wars when barrier troops were used, like in WW2, that was generally not paired with an enemy one could reasonably safely surrender to (the soviets used barrier troops in fighting the germans, mostly behind penal battallions, but the germans treated soviet POWs essentially as badly as jews, so generally either death by labour or just execution). the russian use of barrier troops is going to make surrendering the best option for a lot of russian soldiers.
