  1. the french were treated moderately well by the nazi occupation, compared to other nazi occupations. the general attitude of soldiers towards civilians was probably more that they were very into checking papers rather than into shooting on sight. for most of the occupation, german soldiers could expect to face some limited accountability if they committed crimes against french people, and only in the final years did the germans introduce the random mass execution policy of retribution against partisan actions that they had been using in the east from the beginning (the typical quota was to shoot 50 civilians for one german wounded by partisan actions, and 100 for one german killed - many more in retribution for officers like heydrich).
