daaaaaamn cockpit country looks amazing! I really hope they don't start mining there. well-preserved tropical rainforest areas are going to get more and more rare and more and more valuable for centuries to come, because the areas being destroyed now would take 300+ years in the best case scenario to grow back into an equivalent of a primary forest. what you have to understand as that the nature there didn't grow the way it is from a clearcut field. every plant, every 500 year old tree in those forests started life under the canopy of an already ancient forest. you can't grow trees the same way in an open field, and without the particular tree species grown the way they are, many of the smaller plant and animal species won't be able to live there the same way either. other potential permanent damage include soil degradation (washing away) when it isn't held together by roots, and even, when large areas are deforested, the entire regional climate can become drier because the forest had previously served as a sponge for water, keeping it from flowing away on the ground (soil that is kept moist by plant cover absorbs rain much better than deeply dried open soil), and instead constantly evaporating it into the air. the evaporation even cools the land in and around the forest. this local climate effect is probably not as pronounced on islands due to the proximity of the sea as it is for example in the amazon though.
