"our objectives have been reached" - yeah right. the US is withdrawing from afghanistan with only the condition that no attacks against america will be launched from afghanistan. they could have done that at least 15 years ago. no, the reason why they're withdrawing now isn't because they have succeeded, it's because they have failed to defeat the taliban and the taliban will sooner or later take over the country unless the US steps up its game by a lot, which they are not willing to do. they reached their objectives by redefining the objectives. it's vietnamization all over again - hand over the war to your local allies and just watch them lose. the only thing the US will do better this time will be to withdraw all american citizens early enough to avoid another embarrassment like the fall of saigon. no sinking helicopters this time. I wonder if it will hurt the democrats' reelection chances that afghanistan will fall to the taliban before the next US presidential election. the excuses will be pathetic. it's all fine and dandy when it'd about bringing the troops home and not spending as much money, but it gets awkward when your allies come begging for help and you twiddle your thumbs. by 2024, there will be no female politicians in afghanistan and the women will all be wearing burkas.
