  2. it's not legal, it's a blatant violation of the sixth amendment that grants the right to a speedy trial. the point is to lock people up until they take a plea deal instead of getting a trial.

Zurround! 1000 I would guess that at least 20% of poor people taking plea deals in the US are innocent. there's an old john oliver episode about prosecutors that's pretty much about this, forcing defendants to opt for plea deals by not giving them trials. basically the prosecutors decide people's punishment alone in most cases because they hold this threat of indefinite detention over people.
