  1. claiming that orphanages are not a thing anymore in the west is very deceptive. the US still has orphanages, they're just called "foster care facilities" now despite the fact that the term "foster care" is supposed to refer to temporary placement in a family environment. much of american "foster care" are large institutions that have nothing to do with family. they're better financed and better regulated than in countries like cambodia (though abuse is still common), but they undeniably are orphanages. only the word has been phased out.

  3. AmazingTim I'm not calling them orphanages for being bad, that's not part of the definition of orphanages. I'm calling them orphanages because they are child care institutions that serve largely the same function as what used to be called orphanages, and because they do not meet the definition of foster care because it's institutional care that has nothing to do with a family. it's just a very obvious mislabelling to dodge the negative associations of the term "orphanage". in reality the successful rebranding has probably contributed to keeping conditions worse than they would have been if the term "orphanage" had been kept, because this would have helped to keep public attention on the potential of these institutions being horrible. nowadays the official lingo is that kids are "in foster care", and most people just assume that it's a much friendlier environment than if they heard about american kids living "in orphanages". I am quite certain that the rebranding has served as an effective cover for abuse.

  4. really? I'm german, and english is way easier. easier than spanish or french, too. english is a lot simpler, just a bit more chaotic. english has few rules, but many exceptions.
