I'm not american, but isn't the way it works that the jury decides guilty or not guilty, and the judge decides the severity of the sentence, so whether it's death or life is entirely the judge's choice? jury trials suck though. it's a really bad idea to build a trial on pretending that random laypeople understand laws and having defense and prosecution lawyers manipulate them both ways will lead to a well-reasoned verdict.

  3. I heard it was because being shot was seen as more adequate for a soldier, and hanging them was to symbolize that they were first and foremost criminals. it might have been the same thing with saddam hussein.

"there's gotta be a more humane way" sure, it's called the guillotine. though if I was to devise a method for my own execution, I would choose a variation of the firing squad wherein a volley of large caliber expanding bullets is shot not at my chest, but at my brain. exploding the brain oughta do the trick, right? hell, you could tie a grenade to my head for all I care. if you make me a good offer, maybe I'll pull the pin for you. I'm not going to be there for the cleanup. the last two options I would want are typical US lethal injections, and gassing. both of which are either in use in the US, or are being discussed to be brought back. yes, the US used to run (single person) gas chambers. also IF you execute people by injection, I will NEVER understand why it isn't just an overdosing opioid drip. that would 100% guarantee that the death would feel great, and 100% guarantee death (easy to ensure even for opioid users through high enough doses). first it makes you feel the best you've ever felt, then you pass out, then you stop breathing of which you feel nothing because you're way passed out, and then you die. works every time. there's also the bonus that opioids are used so much that government/prison administration access to it will never be a problem.

  8. one of the most obvious, but not the only thing. prison sentences are also way too severe in the IS (like double of many european countries), conditions in the prisons are terrible, and the average prisoner comes out more criminal than they went in - which is of course in the interest of the PRIVATE PRISON LOBBY, which is an utterly insane industry to have. there are plenty of other issues too, for example all citizens should be allowed to vote no matter if they are or were lovked up, and solitary confinement shouldn't be treated like a timeout or ever used long term because it is psychological torture.
