the fact that they didn't give the reason feels like it might have been due to toxic substances in vietnamese incense sticks or something like that. it could also have been a political decision though by the hindu nationalist government to boost either domestic production or perhaps import from a more politically beneficial country (maybe nepal makes incense sticks?). I'm a little confused since as far as I know, vietnam is sufficiently opposed to china to placate india. but maybe the indian government still sees them as too communist.

in case you're confused like I was watching this, since that stick core stuff totally looks like bamboo but the video claims that it's "bark" of "vau and nua trees" - it is bamboo, vau and nua are especially flammable large varieties of bamboo. it's not bark, and no bamboo is a tree (they're giant grasses).

Louis Clave yeah, definitely took me way longer to google than to guess and I still don't know much more. it's a ban on incense products from vietnam and china to help indian incense producers.

A S yeah that sounds about right ^^ it was probably useful for convincing the government to ban incense stick imports that incense sticks are used for hindu rituals in india, so the government could link domestic production with religious identity.

Rahul Rahul I didn't say that it's a modi project or anything about dictatorship, I said it was a BJP project, which it is. make in india was started by the BJP government in 2014, and it's based on their nationalist/populist ideology. don't try to tell me that the BJP needs opposition support to do things, they do whatever the hell they want and their government has majority control of both houses of parliament. india isn't a dictatorship, but it's a backsliding democracy under the control of a borderline fascist party. india producing more stuff to be a little more like china is probably a very good idea, although the project's execution has been very embarrassing at times, like with that supposed 1$ indian smart phone or whatever that was supposed to cost, which in reality was just a ~30$ chinese phone. ;) the project has definitely been taken for a ride by scammers.

Louis Clava why, did you google it? it doesn't strike me as something that would be particularly easy to google in english.

popcorn protectionism is far from being universally favored, it's just been more popular with right-populists in many countries in recent years (like with trump and with brexit). relatively free trade has a lot of upsides too, and it has overall massively driven global economic delevopment in the last century. most basically, allowing cheaper imports lets citizens buy products more cheaply. the buyers win, the domestic producers lose. whether the state wins or loses is a more complex question - it probably tends to earn less money from imports than from local production, but also the buyers have money left over to spend on other taxable stuff, and perhaps more importantly, trade restrictions like this tend to be followed by retribution in kind from the foreign countries whose export business was harmed by the restriction.

CHIEF JOEY hindu nationalism is the BJP's ideology. they consider india to be a hindu nation, as opposed to a secular nation that has a hindu majority (and large muslim minority of ~30%), but with no special status or extra rights for hindus and hindu organizations. the BJP demotes muslims to second class citizens, has made a law to single out muslims as being the only ones among india's large population of undocumented people who can't gain citizenship and should ideally be deported to pakistan or bangladesh, or alternatively locked up in concentration camps (I don't think they went theough with fully implementing this, but they passed the laws and built some camps). prime minister modi himself used to be banned from entering the US right up until he became PM because the US congress held him responsible for a huge wave of government-incited anti-muslim pogroms in a state of which he was the governor at the time.

CHIEF JOEY it would be awaste of MY time because you have absolutely no clue what the BJP is.

Anmol Singh clearly I know what the BJP is. it's a hindu-fascist party. big fans of ethnic cleansing and discrimination. what communist government are you referring to? I'm german, there is no communist government anywhere in europe and certainly not here. we have a new socdem/green/liberal coalition government, and before that we had a centrist coalition of conservatives and socdems. german politics are primarily very boring.
