  1. water can flow underground. perhaps when they lower the groundwater level in the salty area, non-salty groundwater flows in from areas around it. they certainly are evaporating a lot of water.

  3. they become blind from the bright light? why the hell would they not buy sunglasses? I don't believe that those would be too expensive or hard to find. if they buy ones with all plastic frames, they'll be cheap and not corrode from the salt.
