  1. it's the inertia of traditional industry opposing and slowing new regulation. european eels used to be extremely extremely common fish, they were found all over europe in huge numbers (they are super resistant to pollution and low oxygen levels, and live in saltwater, brackish water, and freshwater, and when it rains they crawl on land to find other bodies of water, so they are/were common in ponds despite spawning in the ocean). the populations have only been crashing in recent decades.

  2. I've seen glass eels swarming by the thousands during daytime at a bathing beach either at the north sea or the baltic when I was a kid, so hearing that they're worth so much and seeing these guys fishing in apparently super sparse glass eel populations is weird
