the hummingbird seems to be the only one where they're close to the correct movement, because the real bird wing seems to be less articulated. other than the hummingbird, it looks to me like the gear-based workarounds for the animals' muscle- and joint-based motions do not allow for a wide enough range of motion, and certainly not for enough independence of motion - the wings flap too small and too symmetrical. I suspect that the next level of development in that regard that they're very much not showing us is probably based on pneumatics or hydraulics. that could probably also be particularly quiet and particularly visually convincing, as you could hide a motorized piston array in the compact body of a bird or bat, and make the wings without any gears or straight trusses. and you could choose between whether you want a folding or a bending motion in all sorts of variations. or maybe you could use a combination of hydraulics and wire pulls. that seems to be roughly how spider legs work. if there is a "bird" in development that can fly on its wings but can also fold them up fully normally, THAT project is onto something!
