  6. you should put that question of whether ukrainian morale is breaking because of missile strikes against civilians into historical context. that sort of thing has been tried before, and on much bigger scale. they called it "strategic bombing" in WW2. the london blitz didn't break england's morale, and the firestorms in hamburg, the rhineland or tokyo didn't break german or japanese morale either. such attacks mostly make people angry, and they get angry at the enemy, at the ones who are doing the bombing. even when their own governments are much more responsible for the state of war than the ukrainian government, like the WW2 governments of germany and japan were. it's not like those sporadic killings of civilians throughout ukraine are doing anything to convince people that ukraine can't win, which is what it would take to make people want to give up. it's rather convincing people that ukraine should fight because russia is evil. it's probably making the ukrainian public less supportive of negotiations with russia, since it makes russia seem less trustworthy.

  14. thanks, I hadn't yet heard the explanation that HIMARS was complicating russian artillery supply by puishing depots back from the front lines. that makes a lot of sense. we already got a pretty good idea of the supply distance that russia is able to effectively bridge by road early in the war near kyiv. I think they run into a lot of trouble around 50km, so the 80km range of HIMARS is definitely a problem. the sort of artillery tatctics of the russians require huge amounts of ammunition, which is super heavy and difficult to transport and load. if ukraine had had HIMARS at the beginning of the war, mariupol might look very different.

  20. it would have been nice to even briefly mention the main animal welfare concerns with horse racing, which are not that "horses die", but rather that their lives are horrible off the race tracks, that they spend their entire lives either standing in boxes alone, or being ridden and tortured for training and racing, never even socialising properly with other horses. they get ridden from far too young an age, their bodies are destroyed in a few years (racing and especially jumping overstress their bodies), and the lucky ones that don't end up put down at the end of their racing careers, like a quarter of the way through a normal horse's lifespan, and instead get sold to horse hobbyists, all have psychiatric issues from the abuse and isolation, and are ill-prepared to adjust to a normal horse's life. in short, the problem is that absolutely no attention is paid to the horses' welfare beyond what is necessary for race performance. they don't live like horses, they live like cars!

  24. starlink has been the most convenient way for ukraine to make long range remote-controlled drones, for example the explosive boats use starlink (direct radio connections have very limited range, a satellite relais gives practically infinite range). however, drone connections are a small percentage of ukraine's military use of starlink, and not even the main arguably offensive one. a more important matter is whether ukraine can keep running its artillery coordination program via starlink, which connects surveillance drones, artillery crews, and army command with one another and enable ukraine to conduct precision artillery strikes much faster than russia. with the long range drones, starlink receivers are physically built into weapons, but in terms of function, ukraine's use of starlink for artillery is no less a weaponisation of the technology.

I'm happy to hear that they're finally changing their minds about home growing. legalizing the trade without legalizing home growing is a totally deranged idea, and the current government initially said that that's what they intended to do. it makes sense to require licensing and testing if one grows to sell, but there is absolutely no good reason to not allow people to grow their own weed when they can legally buy weed (it's just a legislative favor done for the cannabis industry, likely to be the result of lobbying from tobacco firms intent on branching out to legal cannabis). there's nothing difficult or dangerous about it that can go wrong. the only possible danger is in smoking moldy weed, but that's an easy mistake to avoid and not a huge responsibility to put on people. restricting the number of plants for private growers is ok, though 3-4 plants per person would be much more reasonable than per household. and really the limit should be slightly higher, since people in germany are likely to grow relatively small plants due to growing mostly indoors and having only a short growing season outdoors. an indoor plant in germany is likely to yield 50-100g, and um to 200g outdoors. in california, which has had a similar plant count limit for a long time (5 or more plants per person I think), the outdoor growing season is so long that plants can grow 3-4m tall and wide and yield a kilo or two each. I would propose a limit of 6 plants per person with plants in the vegetative state (not flowering) counting half. that's still nowhere near a viable commercial growing operation.

  44. makes sense. their coverup has clearly exposed hezbollah to be largely responsible for the storage of that ammonium nitrate in the beirut harbour. they probably kept it there because there they had the control and the access to many ships that they needed to divert the stuff to their own clandestine storage sites or aligned terror groups for bomb making. ammonium nitrate is the standard high explosive that's almost always used for large IEDs such as roadside and car bombs, as well as improvised rockets like the ones hamas an PIJ shoot at israel. that stuff doesn't get left in a corrupt port like beirut in a terrorist-linked country like lebanon because people forgot about it, it gets "forgotten" in order to sell it off for bomb making. by the way the official stored amount was 2700 tons, but the size of the blast matches what is to be expected from only 500 tons. gee, I wonder why.
