  1. the real problem with hosting the olympics is that setting it all up costs a lot of money that's never earned back through the visitors. they require the construction of stadiums too big to ever be used properly again, as well as accommodation for competitors and visitors and even public transport, all ofwhich is built for a onetime event with many people, and then never again used by so many people. and of course there are costs associated with the many cops needed for crowd management and whatever else drunk sports spectators get up to. all countries pay to host the olympics. this leads to the result that mostly shady autocrats offer to host them, because they can throw money away without accountability and decide that the personal and national prestige is worth the expense. it's similar with the football world cup, but I think the olympics probably tend to cost more to host due to the need for different types of stadium to be built instead of just one huge football stadium.
