actually the real story is that america and its NATO allies WERE nation building in afghanistan (really only the US started to deny it half way through because it wasn't going great), and then we all completely abandoned afghanistan, broke all our promises except for those trump made to the taliban, and ruined the lives of all those afghans who trusted us most. for 20 years we told women and girls that they could be whatever they wanted to be instead of being glorified house slaves, and now the likes of joe biden are acting like it's ok to abandon them if we just say that we were lying all along and we never cared. as a german leftist millenial, I can't recall a political issue my country was directly involved in during my lifetime that sickens me as much as this despicable betrayal of the afghan people, and perhaps most prominently the american left's (no, I don't mean joe biden) anti-humanitarian america first advocacy for it, and even against an extension of the kabul airlift.

the republicans are blaming "the illegals" for coming to america to live honest and productive lives the only way they can. the right are always the ones most fond of blaming the most powerless people for how the world works.

that would not serve the purpose of asylum correctly, but I think most of them would strongly prefer what you're proposing to the best they can hope to get in reality, which is likely to involve a longer period without a work permit and a whole lot more beaurocracy and uncertainty.
