rape is used as a weapon of war to damage the social cohesion, public mental health, and ethnic/national/sectarian pride of a targeted civilian population. in many cultures the stigma of rape is so strong that raping people damages the society more than killing them would. the intent is similar to genocide. of course the rapists themselves do it because they enjoy it, but it is quite often encouraged by leaders for this purpose. that, and it is commonly seen as a good motivator to reward soldiers for capturing territory with raping the women and children there, usually combined with looting.
