I think it's interesting how when there was no eruption, the la palma megatsunami hypothesis was pretty popular in the media, and now they are completely avoiding the topic. people say the media always sensationalizes, but in fact there also is a tendency that potential real catastrophes get downplayed, like in the very beginning of the covid pandemic (it wasn't a consensus, but many in the media clung on to "everything is fine"), or this year with the collapse of afghanistan, where many in the media kept pretending like the war was about to turn around any day, and almost nobody wanted to even consider the possibility of a full taliban takeover until one or two days before they captured kabul. in both cases, it reall was both western media and western politicians who in unison acted out the "this is fine" meme.

  6. personally I'm far enough away from the atlantic coast, but otherwise I'd be worried. in the worst case scenario, even the heads up the US east coaat would get probably wouldn't save wverybody there because the roads would quickly be blocked. I guess the visits by the spanish prime minister and royal family to la palma should make me think that the risk is low, but as a cynic I'm inclined to think that they may simply have had an immediate evacuation by helicopter on standby.
