and by "wet" in august, you mean that it was also very unseasonably cold (~10° lower than normal) at the same time as a prolonged mediterranean heatwave, and all those global temperature records! there was a stationary boundary between a mediterranean high pressure and a northern european low pressure system hovering around the alps or southern to central germany for I think 5 or 6 weeks! currently here in northern germany, since the heat has begun to return somewhat ~2 weeks ago, I have killed more mosquitos than in the last five years combined. and I don't think they're quite here yet, but I hear germany is currently getting its first ever serious mosquito-born illness, which is the west nile virus hitchhiking on the invasive asian tiger mosquito (also potentially carrying several other human diseases like yellow fever, dengue, and zika).

@Ominousheat really? I have seen heat damage to foliage before, but that normally looks different than autumn. it's normally visually identifiable as an unusual drying process, as if you lightly roasted a leafy branch in an oven. it can be limited somewhat to tips or edges of leaves, and typically has leaves remaining firmly attached in a much more thoroughly dead state than they normally would exhibit when they drop in autumn. I reckon the weakening of the leaf stem base to facilitate dropping is a rather prolonged process probably set off by the same change that causes the destruction and reabsorption of chlorophyll, which also generally is not part of leaves dying from heat or drought (leaving leaves potentially greenish when dry, or just darker than dried autumnal leaf litter). autumnal leaf-shedding typically causes leaves to drop with seemingly full moisture content, whereas heat and drought do the opposite, making leaves dry out without dropping.

1:16 750l/m² in 18 hours? daaaamn! in other words, that's 75cm of rainfall (about 2.7 appropriately selected freedom appendages).

@8fledermaus8 sure, but it doesn't look like autumn, it looks like drought.
