I wonder what this will do to the shipping fees for electric cars - them having a chance to cause this much damage is an incredibly big liability.

@toyotaprius79 oil is not a threat to the transport vessel and potential other valuable stuff on it (which is none, since oil is only transported in exclusive oil tankers). oil damages the environment when an oil tanker sinks for reasons other than the oil it's carrying. I don't believe it is common for shipping companies to be held accountable for oil spills. but this car battery destroyed a whole massive transport ship containing 4000 other new cars, and the company operating the ship is on the hook for all of them unless they manage to blame the producer of that electric car. between the cars and the ship, I would guess 100-300m$ in damage. how much profit would the transport of one car normally pay the ship operator, how many times this amount did this fire cost, and how often does this sort of thing need to be expected to happen? it's difficult to derive probabilities from an event so rare but so severe, but a very easy reaction to it would be to avoid transporting electric cars at all.
