  1. neutrality in WW2 made more sense since ireland was small and poor, geographically situated such that it was possible to stay out of the war, and britain was so hostile to ireland that fighting on britain's side was an uninviting prospect. today, ireland is much richer and an EU member that should participate in common EU foreign and defense policy. sweden is in a more precarious location than ireland, like ireland an EU but not NATO member, but even they have sent 5000 anti-tank missiles to ukraine.

  4. switzerland is a good extreme example. everybody knows switzerland as perhaps the most neutral country, but what most don't know is that this neutrality has always been built on absolutely paranoid defense plans (they call it the national redoubt). hitler only didn't invade switzerland because he didn't think that it was feasible. all through the cold war and to some degree still today (I think they reduced it but I bet they'll reactivate it all now), switzerland has had ready to use defensive positions and tunnels in the mountains all throughout the country, much of it disguised as civilian buildings, with bridges and roads already prepared for demolition. switzerland currently has on demand usable bunker capacity for significantly more people than its whole population (because they expect some rich guests, I guess). I'm pretty sure that military service is mandatory for men, and after military service, every soldier takes their service rifle home and is supposed to keep it ready to use. basically switzerland is always ready to get invaded, even though they're landlocked between very friendly countries.
