I have heard an interesting claim once that some horse armour (I think a byzantine kind of heavy cavalry) put masks on horses in part to scare enemy horses. the mask bits on this japanese armour don't look particularly likely to have been designed for this to me, but who knows? horses are kinda scared of everything, maybe making another horse look like an unknown kind of animal with horns and such is effective for this. I'm pretty sure that I have seen horses be scared of rabbits, plastic bags, and out of place piles of horse poop.
