  1. what materials could you use to make a light barrel? I know it would be much harder to make, but would titanium do the job? I hear the M777 howitzer is mostly titanium, does that include the barrel? how about skipping the issue of machining rifling into titanium by using a plain tube sleeve of titanium snugly fit around a thin rifled steel barrel? I think you could certainly make them fit snug enough if you made the fit conical, but perhaps also by putting the barrel very cold into a hot sleeve. though I suppose heating from a lot of firing could cause some sort of issue. does titanium transmit heat well enough? and does titanium expand at a different rate than steel when heated? if titanium expands less, that would make the barrel more solid as it heats up, and if it expands more, it would weaken and warp the barrel as it heats up.
