  1. the diagonal cut is more visible, but much better for repairability or for using it unrepaired, because the barrel band holds it together somewhat well, and if you did glue it together with a wooden plate as a spacer in between, the much larger gluing surface would make the joint much sturdier than a joint steaight across would be. whoever cut this stock knew what he was doing, more so than the guys who cut straight across.
