yeah, as a woodworker, that zigzag joint really stuck out to me, too. I don't think rifles like that normally have that, do they? I think I've only seen straight joints between those two pieces on similar rifles on this channel. or at least I haven't noticed one like this.
in case somebody doesn't see the big difference in terms of manufacturing: straight joints can be cut easily with planes, planers, or (to a lower standard) even table saws. with that zig-zag joint, you could only plane the protruding longitudinal surfaces, whereas the recessed longitudinal surfaces would need to be cut with other tools that don't as easily produce flat surfaces (like chisels or files, though I think at that time they might have already used a router, which could cut most of that longitudinal surface nice and flat to the right depth, just with round ends instead of corners), and the short transverse surfaces need to be sawed at precisely the correct positions for the parts to fit together that well. it's not a super complicated problem, but it's like 10 times more trouble than making that a straight joint, so a pretty odd joice.
