france is indisputably the european country with the most colonial foreign policy today. it's also very apparent if you just look at where they send their military - to police former french colonies.

@Kob1yashi I'm sure french people are more aware of africa than probably all other european countries' citizens, if for no other reason than the fact that an extremely high portion of french citizens and residents have african ancestry/citizenship. in france, most ethnic minorities are african (especially north african, but also many subsaharan), whereas for example here in germany, the common ones are turkish, arab, or eastern european, and in britain, it's indians/pakistanis/bangladeshis. france also used to pretend that overseas territories like algeria were actually france, whereas other european countries saw their colonies more as foreign countries they occupied.

@esanahka9284 gaddhafi certainly didn't ask for french help. it was the french who changed the UN/NATO no-fly-zone into the no-libya-zone by bombing ground targets.

@esanahka9284 oh, if you want to see a REALLY bad somewhat recent example of french involvement in africa, check out france's role in preparing and aiding the rwandan genocide, and rescuing the top perpetrators. france supported the genocide because the hutus wanted to keep rwanda french-speaking, whereas the tutsis threatened to bring about an english-speaking rwanda. france launched their own invasion to oppose the UN mission sent to stop the genocide.

I wonder what would happen if they all sued france to hand over all of the currency reserves. could france even come up with the money? it's basically a massiveslush fund with an extraordinarily low chance of being withdrawn to a high degree. france has very little practical reason to actually hold that money.

@seemymobot4987 if enough of those countries do it together, under broadly internationally recognised governments, then france won't be able to coup them all. it would be too scandalous.

@esanahka9284 france trained and armed the interahamwe militia primarily responsible for the genocide (as well as the hutu military), and they ignored reports by the french military officers in charge of the training that the people they were training and arming were very openly planning to kill all tutsis. france didn't tell them to commit the genocide, but they knowingly enabled its preparation for years beforehand, and eventually tried to intervene to prevent the hutus' military defeat and enable them to continue the genocide, and then evacuated their genocidal leaders to live the rest of their lives free in france and other countries. they came to rwanda to fight the tutsi army, only failed to do it because the blue helmets got in the way, and they damn near decided to attack the blue helmets.

no, just a few. really mostly mali, and they're selling their mineral wealth to russia instead. oh, and the central african republic has been doing the same, and I think burkina faso is turning on france a little. none of them are going to end up doing well, it's all military juntas that traditionally don't know what they're doing, and are internationally unpopular.

@Doggo954 yeah you might want to look that up. seriously. it's not that france "moght have armed one side", they armed ans trained both the hutu-controlled rwndan military AND the interahamwe hutu power militia, aho were the main perpetrators and told the french military officers training them about their genocide plans years ahead of time. operation turqoise was not an exclusion zone for genocidaires, it was an exclusion zone for the RPF. if it wasn't a mission to support the genocide itself, it at least was an attempt to help the hutu war effort taking place in parallel to the genocide.
