Fun fact… On 9/11 WCBS-TV was the only station able to stay on-air because they had a backup transmitter at the ESB.

The WEA tones that you played are illegal to broadcast over-the-air in the US! We actually have been told by managers to turn off all government alerts on our phones due to that so one doesn’t accidentally go over the air.

Oh and the 80th floor master antenna is the original FM combiner. It had to be taken out of service because there was too much RF getting into the observation deck.

It appears there are some ENG receive antennas on the mast too. Those are the microwave antennas that look like a can. They have a steerable antenna under that radome. I’m guessing that microwave ENG isn’t popular in the UK. Then again, most of ours has moved to LTE/5G backpacks from microwave.

Yes. And if we have issues we have to file with the FCC. (See my other comment about that.)

I'm not sure how UK law works, but if a station isn't running at it's licensed power in the US, they must notify the FCC and request permission to stay there. I believe this has to occur with-in a 30 day window. For example, there are several radio stations here in the normal climates running reduced power right now due to ice on the antenna who have filed notices with the FCC. tl;dr: A station in the US can't just run low power because they want to. There's a window of allowable output +/- your authorized power. (I think it's +/-10%...or at least that's when our transmitter alerts us anyway.)

I thought we had 6m but not 4m

@k.r.baylor8825 with the advent of FM translators for AM stations, there are now a lot of "crap channel" AMs in the US who are running music and brand with their translator frequency, and don't mention the AM signal outside of the TOH legal ID.
