Fun fact… On 9/11 WCBS-TV was the only station able to stay on-air because they had a backup transmitter at the ESB.

Absolutely want more info on loading things into the C64! Especially the Pi 1584
14
Oh and the 80th floor master antenna is the original FM combiner. It had to be taken out of service because there was too much RF getting into the observation deck.
11
…and I’m the volunteer who supplied the AM radio to play the music. Lol. Edit: I uploaded the video as a short to my YouTube
10
12:21 it’s tangara time! Wait…why didn’t I become a power ranger?
6
2:54 I had our engineers at the station teach me! And OMG LAN party!
5
5:06 it could be FM interference. The KMSP tower isn’t too far north of the city (that’s where the major FMs are) in Shoreview. (Telefarm also in Shoreview does not really have FMs on it, at least not in primary service.) And some LPFMs are licensed to StP but they should be a non-issue.
5
7:24 oh those were stock images lol. I was gonna ask when you found a deer in the city lol.
5
The real question is… When are The Stop Bits playing 1st Ave? Ok ok. The Entry? Ok fine some person’s sketchy basement?
5
I think ISDN is dead. Last users of it I knew of were radio stations. In fact my only experience with ISDN was the line we had in Madison that went between my station and the Entercom (now Audacy) studios. The meteorologists used it to send weather updates to them, and they used it to provide us traffic updates during the morning and 5pm newscasts.
5
Do I spy Workbench 1.3 behind you?? Or maybe it’s WB 3. I can’t remember lol.
5
I totally want to hack that little cyber deck lol.
4
5:33 I never knew that lock had a horn. Or at least I don't think I knew that lol. Which is funny because I live in the Highland Park neighborhood and travel that bridge often to go to/from Minneapolis. Actually, I think you're the first time I've actually seen that lock operating, now that I think about it.
4
That’s WAY larger than the one we have in the engineering shop. Oh wait…ours is just a side marker not a flasher.
4
Would it run better under Linux?
3
@archloy it should be in my shorts
3
Gosh. It’s been a while since I’ve been to AxMan. This thing is super neat.
3
Yesss! Cold War history!!! …and I thought you were gonna be at the place on the North Shore.
3
Dang. I was hoping there was more activity here in the Cities. I’ve thought of getting one of those after seeing Ringway Manchester using them in the UK.
3
6:08 frogfind is your friend here
3
1:25 in Soviet Russia, spy camp goes to you
3
You need to take one of those PTZ and beef up the motors. I believe that is what the pro ones are. I’m off this week so I can’t go peek at the big dishes at the station. You might also need counter weights.
3
4:39 we use Starlink when we are in low-cell coverage areas to give WiFi to our LiveU bags.
3
Order a pizza from it?
3
5:42 ooo. I’ve been looking for one. And by looking for, I mean trying to talk work out of the one we found in a cabinet.
3
It appears there are some ENG receive antennas on the mast too. Those are the microwave antennas that look like a can. They have a steerable antenna under that radome. I’m guessing that microwave ENG isn’t popular in the UK. Then again, most of ours has moved to LTE/5G backpacks from microwave.
2
2:07 Yes! FGTC!! I volunteer in the Retro Room on occasion.
2
Dude. This is one of those computers I’d love to have.
2
2:14 this dish reminds me of a smaller version of the dishes that are on top of our DSNG vans.
2
8:47 hahahhaahahhahaha yeah…the postal carriers here are sus too. I have something important coming that I’m having sent to the studio because it’s way more reliable than my apartment.
2
We even use SCADA in TV to monitor the transmitter sites. Though it goes through a fiber link these days. Previously, to monitor the remote sites in Alexandria (no longer exists) & Hackensack we used dial-up modems!
2
I’m not in tech. But burnout is real in everywhere.
2
0:14 OMG "practice freeway" Not that anyone drives 45 on it.
2
28:10 I think it’s F10 on the Dells. I recall having to smash it repeatedly until it took.
2
Seems like a video from better times…..when it was warm.
2
Was that the Twin Cities Media Helicopter that went overhead lol?
2
G19 is where a lot of network and program distribution feeds are located. Or at least were. Tbh we haven’t done much satellite work or tuning since master control was gunned out so I have no idea what’s on there anymore lol.
2
10:38 believe it or not, I barely watch TV myself. I usually watch YouTube via my Apple TV on my TV lol.
2
3:20 OMG. I wish this had been done when I was taking my walk across the Ford Rd. bridge a couple of weeks ago. That would have been epic.
2
6:13 isn’t being in the MSP landing path “fun”?
2
I wonder if this was an old school streaming encoder.
2
8:45 87 would be late Cold War. 89 was basically the end lol.
2
9:15 there too, eh?
2
I feel like G-18 is one of the ones we have had issues with.
2
Why is it always the cows???
2
Subies rock. I have a Crosstrek. Best winter car ever.
2
What in the Ax-Man pickup?
2
Oh yeah. I have to put LNA in when I’m tuning the microwave that the helicopter sends out. Especially on the St. Paul antenna. A lot of interference around there lol.
2
8:31 sounds like a job for self-tappers
2
Ooooh. That briefcase is interesting. Also ooooooooh radios. The urge to ask to pick through them lol.
2
Ooooh. Is that the place with those weird big concrete things along the road?
2
Do I spy an SX-64 at 0:24?! And if you need help with the computer. Lmk. Lol. Those are my era of machines.
2
Neat! And yay to another Fastmail user :)
2
We still have one of those floating around the WCCO engineering department.
2
@saveitforparts it’s not even for that lol. They found it while cleaning out a storage room during the pandemic lol!
2
7:36 they should have been wired so they’re fault tolerant. One of our towers had half of a beacon fail, but the other half was still working.
2
What are the old school rabbit ears for on top of your network rack?
2
Oof. It was brutal back on the 3rd lol. I had been moving the week prior. I blame my mom since she came up to help…from Arizona.
2
10:52 hahahaha I was ironically just driving over there like…a half-hour ago lol. Love the DMV office down in South Saint Paul vs. the one in StP proper. Lol.
2
23:34 oh…dominos. Wah wah wah wah waaaaaaaaaah
2
4:18 I thought it was a RFU not a remote lol. And that’s kinda awesome that you got that PTZ unit. Looks a lot like what we use even to this day in the studio. Also, it’s likely that it IS just serial but with a weird connector. I was sure the documentation would be online. Those things usually are. Or they’re reverse engineer able. Lol. Our engineers have done that before. Anyway, I’m not sure it’s outdoor rated fyi.
2
Man! I wanna know how you find all this kinda stuff! This is neat! ‘course I remember dumpster diving / garbage picking in the 90s when you used to be able to find good electronics. Like once we found…a crap ton of PS/2 systems.
2
There’s like no nodes over on my side of StP. At least not that I’ve been able to hit. Granted I have a not so good setup.
2
Oh maaaannn. I wish I could take you up to the IDS rooftop. You’d love it up there! Though, might be able to snag you a tour of our studio. Lol.
2
Was that looking at the 10th Ave. bridge rebuild they did a while back?
2
Nice! That’s a neat little gadget. I need to scour Axman again lol. Also I want one of those Model 100s. They are LEGENDARY in journalism circles. I keep trying to pry the one we found in a storage room away from engineering lol. It’s likely headed to ewaste when one of our engineers retires. (It’s in his little museum.) Maybe I can snag it then lol. Also sounds like it’s time to mod it lol.
2
Have you ever dug through the U's surplus store?
1
10:27 they were so amazing. Compared to all the other MP3 players on the market. Looking at you Zune. Lol
1
3:21 ::clutches my pearls:: not VIM!!! (Insert how EMacs, Ed, or even Nano is way better here)
1
I love that you included the Cherry and Spoon on your map animation.
1
Is it wrong I kind of want to dig through that obsolete radio box lol?
1
@gaspumprepairservice7009 hahahahahahahahahaha Granted…I live in the same city as he does so there’s that lol.
1
0:23 I like trains!
1
1:06 Eustis over 94? 1:11 94 in StP?
1
@saveitforparts shocking. I used to drive 94 between the downtowns before I moved and…I never saw them fixing those ones. But the one at 94 & 280. All. The. Time.
1
I think you should be able to mitigate the noise somehow. I mean…RADAR antennas are able to, so why not radio telescopes?
1
10:18 try moving in that weather. It SUCKED. (At least I assume it’s that Minnesota heatwave lol.)
1
Kinda wonder what the difference between German Aldi and US Aldi/Trader Joe's is in compared to this.
1
Wait... Is that the C64C you picked up at Free Geek when I was there?! Also are you keeping up with the Commodore? I mean I am. And we know it's keeping up with you!
1
4:59 you’re welcome 🙃
1
22:11 your sweatshirt has “daaaaancing queen…” running through my head.
