  1. Might? There’s zero chance that basic life didn’t evolve on other planets. Zero. It’s happened. We just can’t get definite proof due to distance yet. At this point it’s about technology. We’re just searching for beings near, at or beyond our level of technology.

If we weren't still rising... you might have a point... but since continuing is more than capable of pushing us from a damaging and dangerous position to a point of cataclysmic destruction... you don't. The consequences, as you mildly put it, won't just be something we can throw money toward and fix like it's a broken down car. The kind of devastation inaction will bring wouldn't even allow our current economies to continue in any meaningful manner.
