Cellular Respiration in plants emits CO2. "PLANT EAT FOOD" is hardly the long and short of the biochemistry happening and ALL life requires a balance to such chemical availability and environmental systems. Can you eat a dump truck or sugar? No? That excess sugar may do harm? Then you may be completely missing the point because you're not performing a science experiment and sharing results, you're justifying a belief with philosophy that has no valid basis and discounts the specific chemistry which has been proven to occur.

I swear all the "iT's PlAnT fOoD" comments are all bots.

@MedicMainDave it's not even partially correct if we're grading a test to be fair... it's not digestion it is respiration and photosynthesis... Forests DO NOT smell any different due to their oxygen content either... oxygen is literally odorless... it is the various terpenes that we can smell... the oxygen content may make for more aerobic activity and respiration and thus make us feel slightly better on top of it but it is NOT the smell of oxygen producing such an effect. Even the idea that planting more trees is viable to solve anything is very much up for debate. Planting trees DOES NOT bring back biosphere stability and biological diversity generating ecosystems. Burning destroyed systems down or fertilizing (naturally) areas near viable ecosystems and allowing unhampered regrowth does much more to bring back such systems... but there is STILL loss compared to untouched areas and it would take decades or centuries for true diversity and new biology generating ecosystems. What we're not understanding is that the temperature spikes in many areas are going to outright kill many of the trees and plants we take for granted in the coming decades just as coral reefs are being impacted by oceanic heatwaves. The comment isn't just incorrect... it's almost completely absurd and represents someone who has no clue what they're talking about and is using a 4th grade understanding of earth science to confuse themselves and people who aren't versed in such sciences. And that's putting it nicely. This is the kind of comment that would be deleted from any scientific review because it clearly doesn't belong in the conversation at all.

@natalierichter2637 That's... not how any of it works...

@Harbringe You make it sound like that's rather meaningful... Just because they release a sixth (roughly as its averages depending on plant and tree and conditions vary) less CO2 doesn't change that it's still releasing CO2. And the ratio also doesn't change the main point here. Oxygen release in some places can add ghgs to the atmosphere. I also didn't get into what happens when the plant dies and decays and the gases it releases at that point. What microbiology and insect ecosystem activity is involved. Or how shifting fire seasons may affect them. These are complex systems. But let's not assume that the ratio is anything beneficial as that doesn't seem to be the case. The idea is that this is a substance. A chemical with distinct properties and isn't "just" plant food. Same as how the oxygen it releases isn't just human breathing wind. And the concept of "plant food" is not even a scientific one. It's not even "just" plant photosynthesis and biochemical reactants. This philosophical argument is deceptive at best and more likely to be near absurdity compared to the full scope of what's happening.

@ The overall chemical equation for cellular respiration is: C6H12O6 + 6 O2 => 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + ATP Photosynthesis: 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + light energy => C6H12O6 + 6 O2 Generally, a plant emits more Oxygen than it emits CO2 but chemically, its rather balanced what they emit due to Photosynthesis not occurring at night. As a chemist, I am stating what actually occurs. Not anyone's feelings on it or assumptions. The above is not debatable unless you have a MOUNTAIN of evidence it's incorrect and explicitly show how in published research.
