Realistically, the path to peace is allowing Russia to annex Donetsk and Luhansk being that they are both majority ethnic Russian populations, and asked Putin to intervene on their behalf due to poor treatment from the Ukrainian government. But Russia will have to concede somewhere also, since in negotiations both sides must win some and lose some. Perhaps Ukraine will no longer be bound to neutrality/act as a buffer state for Russia? Time will tell.
