Stopping: apply brake, downshift if more braking power needed or using controlled deceleration in inclement weather. Taking power away from tires in FWD/4WD means you're losing traction control if an avoidance scenario arises; If RWD and no ABS, you risk lockups like no other by taking power off the tires and applying brake [especially in inclement weather scenarios] Coasting/cruising: leave in gear, especially if 4WD or FWD since power to the steering tires is better than no power in an avoidance scenario (animal, other drivers, etc.) Edging to a downhill driveway from garage: Yeah, Neutral all the way. Probably the only scenario where I agree with using Neutral, or the only one I've seen where neutral is actually useful. Just my own 2 cents and experiences. I'll also add that for some reason my respect for operating a vehicle has increased exponentially from learning to fly aircraft.
