Frankly, I believe the GOP really started down hill when George H W Bush (Chairman of the RNC in the 60s) talked the Racist Corrupt Southern Blue Dog Democrats into joint the Republicans. If you notice all Truly Reprehensible Republicans (excepting Trump) comes from the South.
