Your comment ironic as you quote history but only a part of history. In the 50s & 60s a very unusual transformation took place, Republicans started embracing Racism and Democrats Started fighting for Civil Rights - thus the Deep South all became Republicans. The transformation of the Democratic Party was complete by the 70s with the exception of Thurmond from South Carolina. The slow creep of Racism in the Republican Party received additional traction under Nixon. However, though Republicans were resistant to Civil Rights, Racism had not fully taken hold of the party. This waffling on the part of the GOP continued until Newt Gingrich came along in 1995 and Racism and a substantial drift to the right occurred within the GOP. The next touch point for the GOP was 2009 and the formation of the Tea Party. From this point on the base GOP started to drift further towards Rightwing Extremism. Obama, a Black/White Man put Rightwing Extremism over the top, and the GOP Base voted accordingly - thus Trump and Trumpism, a mix of racism and Rightwing Extremism.
It is no fluke that 100% of Klan Members, Proud Boys, Neo Nazis, Militias, and White Supremacy Groups Support Trump.
