  14. Crouchy232323 Not really, I was studying to practice criminal law in law school. I actually have a BA in criminology that I picked up in my spare time. (Fortunately, my wife set me straight by pointing out that, with an engineering degree, patent law is a lot less stress and a lot more money.) Here's a god overview article. Basically, veterans commit violent crime at roughly 1/4 the rate of the general population by even the most rabid anti-military estimates. http://strongeratthebrokenplaces.com/veterans-and-violent-crime/ The reality is that compulsory military service would do these drug addicts a lot more good than any rehab program. In addition, they would actually be providing a service to society rather than being a drain on it. But the left wing has gotten into the habit of demonizing the military so much that they forget how useful it is to get people's lives turned around through their own efforts. Let me give you an example. In 2003, my unit deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom and, at the time, we had at least half dozen former gang members in the unit. (My combat engineering company had ~100 men in it.) They were some of the most squared away Marines in my unit. One was a staff NCO (a Staff Sergeant) who still had highly visible gang ink on his arms. In my experience, anybody can turn their life around if they put any serious effort into it. I am proud to have served with each and every Marine in my unit and am proud to say that the worst disciplinary infraction we had in four years of rotating deployments was a bar fight that got a bit out of hand. (Nobody was seriously injured, but the provosts had to break it up.) I can honestly say that the undergrad engineering students at my university were nowhere near as well behaved. The dorms constantly smelled of fresh popcorn (to cover up the smell of fresh smoked weed) and there were guys passed out in the halls every Saturday. There's a reason why I would have preferred to live in on-base housing while going to school if it was at all practical. My experience is limited, but my wife, who's a former Army MP more or less agrees with it. The garbage she deals with as a beat cop makes her days in Ft. Benning look like a vacation.
