  4.  @chongxina8288 If the US wasn’t militarily defeated in Vietnam, then why didn’t they march to Hanoi and impose regime change? Because that’s what a military victory in Vietnam would have to have been. While I agree the US military capability to wage war on the ground in Vietnam far exceeded the VC and NVA, it’s nonetheless a fact it left the field to them. I don’t know how you spin that away from a military defeat. In the last 70 years or so we’ve seen the situation arise where wars are not won by one side “whipping” the other. Since, arguably, the Vietnam War, the US hasn’t engaged in the kind of symmetrical wars where roughly comparable military forces duke it out until one destroys the other and the victor imposes a lasting peace (on its terms) on the defeated nation. Instead we now see US in asymmetrical conflicts, where there is no serious opposition to its military power, but nonetheless it has no chance of “winning”. The latest example has been Afghanistan, but before that we had “Mission Accomplished” in the chaotic quagmire they left Iraq in. Neither can be remotely described as victories, same as the Russians experience in Afghanistan.
