European here. So, if Canada offered USA exactly that, by way of a completely tariff free (both ways) trading relationship, would that make this whole issue disappear?

@ I don’t believe Isolationism would make America anything other than isolated. I’m not sure some Americans understand that if they want to isolate from the rest of us, we’ll say OK, see you later.

@TheRenRabbitHole I find this whole blue on blue fight baffling. To think there is a significant enough portion of the US public that appear OK with this is very surprising.

@ I think there’s much in that. Sure, the Canadians could conceivably reorient their economy away from US, but that would need a lot of time. Which, if Trump continues to play very hardball, they wouldn’t have.

@nodekapunk European NATO already outspends Russia by a huge margin. To protect us from our only potential threat, which is a Russia that has taken 3 years to conquer 20% of its next door neighbour. US should perhaps consider if or when you tell us we're on our own with Russia, we tell you the same about China. You make a good point about the loss of US trade, that will indeed be a blow, but Europe is a bigger economy. We will survive and we will very soon learn to live without the US. Not sure how that benefits US.

@ Flexibility? Some countries have advantages that mean they can make things cheaper, such as access to natural resources. For example, where I come from we can’t grow fruit or make wine, so we have no choice but to import from countries that do. It may not be fair or reasonable to insist or expect that the country that supplies us has to buy back the same amount.

@ Sure, makes sense, but that’s a tough gig. You can’t lose a huge chunk of export revenue without pain.
