@ Better tell the US and UK Govts then. Both of whom recognise Beijing as the sole ruler of China, including Taiwan. In fact Taiwan independence only recognised by 12 states - have a look at them then remind me they’re independent.

@douglasnorth2429 Correct. Some people try to convince us of 2 contradictory ideas. 1. Russia is struggling to beat one of the poorest nations in Europe, where it enjoys massive geographical and logistics advantages to conduct a military campaign. 2. Western Europe/NATO is in danger of invasion from Russia.

What does a Trump victory mean for what China thinks of Taiwan? I dunno, maybe that it will remain part of China, as the international community agrees. Why are we so concerned about an internal Chinese matter? Should the Chinese consider it their duty to be concerned about UKs rule of Northern Ireland, should China think it can intervene in the Scottish independence cause?

@jmaitland5709 A wrong analysis. Ukraine is throwing all they have at the Russians in an attritional war where their losses are becoming critical. The Russians are constantly probing multiple points all along the front lines looking for weaknesses to exploit. Manpower shortages especially will start becoming more common as this conflict goes on as Ukraine won’t be able to continue plugging gaps. Once they do a Ukrainian collapse will quickly ensue when breaches start occurring that aren’t plugged. I’m in awe at the tenacity and bravery of the Ukrainian troops, but the fact is they’re in a war they can’t win. They’re only trying to influence how they lose at this stage.

@ Think Eastern Front in 1942, then think Eastern Front 1943. Prepared defences can collapse under sustained pressure.

@jmaitland5709 A few metres? Russia has been consistently advancing since the utter failure that was the Ukrainian “offensive”. I could list the towns and cities that have fallen since then, but perhaps you should read the NYT article “Russia’s swift march forward in Ukraine’s east”. NYT hardly a paid up Russia fan.

@ScottishAtheist What difference does it make? How do you know another Rssian president (Medvedev) wouldn't be more aggressive? I try to avoid personalising politics.
