@HanSolo__ They have, just not in the ways you're looking for. Ru is a net grain exporter now, with no famines - they saw importance of food security and invested heavily into it. The events covered here happened during a time of crisis - after the crisis they looked to fix what was broken. Sure they're still authoritarian, but they aren't starving.

@tomeks666 By 'net grain exporter' in this case I mean they produce more than they need for themselves, not simply that they export. The 'net' is subtracting their own consumption, without any famine. Even now during a wa and sanctions they still produce far more than they consume.

@John_Smith_86 No lol! Just between 1880 - 1920 in India there was an estimated 100 MILLION excess unalives. Now imagine the figure for the full 2+ centuries of the Raj. Famines were MORE common than before under them, and life expectancy went DOWN. They were well run alright - at extracting wealth. An estimated 45 TRILLION in wealth...

@jhoughjr1 They didn't, in fact they didn't apply anything to make things better. Colonialism was an extractive enterprise, and they established what practices they needed to extract wealth. The result was more famine and lower life expectancy

@John_Smith_86 No it's not. I was talking about the entire colonial period over 2 centuries, not just those 6 years. It is not reasonable.

@John_Smith_86 Well they were better than King Leopold of Belgium anyway. That's not saying much, considering under him half the population of the Congo, which was a tenth of all of Africa at the time, unalived in as little as 20 years. That was so bad even other colonial powers were aghast at it. So yeah, there were some worse colonial regimes I guess...
