Jakarta is even worse. Indonesia is literally moving its capital elsewhere cos of how bad it's got.

What India needs to do most, along with the rest of Asia, is shift away from rice. It's just too water intensive of a crop. And yet the govt. in India, as elsewhere, actually offers subsidies for rice production instead, which is ridiculous.

@JasperKlijndijk If you call still being almost a billion people by the end of the century a 'quick' fall, I think we have very different ideas of what 'quick' means.

Well Venice is a city that shouldn't even exist. You're basically building on water. Mexico City is another like that. Their fall isn't so much cos we stretched the environment beyond breaking point (though we have), but more cos we shouldn't have built a city there to begin with.

That river interlinking plan goes back decades. It's been brought up over and over again, and shot down each time. And not just cos of politics or money, even most environmental experts are against it. Though it would be interested to have a video on why though. Anyway, what India needs to do most, along with the rest of Asia, is shift away from rice. It's just too water intensive of a crop. And yet the govt. in India, as elsewhere, actually offers subsidies for rice production instead, which is ridiculous.

Of course people will protest at their groundwater use being restricted, so rather just make it so they don't need as much of it as rice demands.

@nando3d491 I don't know how converting it from a percentage to absolute numbers changes anything. Sure there'll be a lot more old people in chin than elsewhere in absolute terms, but there'll also be a lot more young people working. This issue is itself an issue of ratios and proportions, so putting it in terms of raw numbers doesn't change anything.

@MithunOnTheNet Tibet is the source of a lot of south asia's rivers, not so much China.

@nando3d491 If population aging is going to doom chin, it's going to doom jap, sk, italy, etc. even sooner. No the fact that they're richer changes little. It doesn't mean they can automate their way out of the problem - or rather, if it does, then so can chin. It's already one of the most robotized nations in the world, even in per capita terms. So either chin is in very serious trouble along with a LOT of other countries, or they'll all pull through. Cos it isn't just them facing this issue.

@danielch6662 'and then raising the fertility rate back up' - yeah good luck with that. No nation has managed to figure out how to do that, despite many years of trying.

@DK-ev9dg I think that's Russia, albeit a lot of it is frozen.

Asia as a whole really need to shift away from rice. It's just far too water intensive for any of them.
