@Madame702 Stop exaggerating lol. 'Most men are in their 60's going into their 70's'. Do you know what 'most' means? Cos that is certainly not it. Just cos you're hearing about demographic decline in these places doesn't mean they're just filled with old men. Hell two of them even have a similar median age as the US. They still have millions - in China's case hundreds of millions - of young people to last them for many years to come. Don't just read the headlines and then let your imagination fill the rest.

@Madame702 Cool! So since more than 9 days have passed since any of those dates, and the Chinese govt. hasn't fallen, I'm gonna say we had a bet for 1 billion $ that the CCP wouldn't fall within 9 days of those blood red skies. Clearly you've lost that bet. Can I have my 1 billion $ winnings now? 🙃

Populations don't exist in lumps you know. As the oldest Japanese die, the currently middle aged ones will be entering that same category. So that doesn't change much. As for human cloning, the technology isn't particularly fancy. We've been able to perform cloning for decades, there's nothing special about humans in that. We haven't done it not cos we can't but cos we chose not to. So that's much more of a social issue than a technological one. Japan is hardly the only country capable of cloning. The question is more which country will be able to normalize the idea. Japan for its part tends to be very traditional, so it's unlikely to be them.

What a bright idea! Why hasn't anyone ever thought of that before?!! So do you have any genius ideas for how to make people do that, at scale? Hopefully something that hasn't been tried by dozens of countries around the world already...

@dirac1254 Well I was more referring to the statement that their demographics 'will go back up', which makes it seem like their problems are going to go away. I suppose yes, a declining population does increase their GDP per capita, but that's more of a statistical artifact from the denominator getting smaller rather than meaning the economy is actually better as the OP seemed to be implying. If it is actually possible for them to reach a post-labor economy via mechanization, then it does at least mean there's fewer people to support with said economy. That said, if such a thing actually happens, it'd invert the current population rhetoric we have - suddenly Japan, China, Europe, etc. are viable again, while India and Africa are in a soup.
