You don't know what colonialism is if you think any of this is at all comparable to it. Look up what colonialism did to the Congo for example. Nothing China could even try to do there today could EVER compare to what the west already did.

@dennisestradda9746 The interest rate isn't even what Africans hate the most about IMF debt, cos both it and Chinese loans are typically renegotiated in case difficulty paying. What they hate is all the interference via conditions, which the Chinese don't do. The IMF dictates policy to recipient countries, China just offers a standard business loan. For China it's simply a transaction, for the IMF it's a mandate. That's why Africans vastly prefer China to the IMF.

@captainalex157 Bub HALF the population died in as little as 20 years. Over 10 MILLION people. For context Africa as a whole had a population a little over 100 million at the time, so that's about a tenth of the population of WHOLE CONTINENT.

@Ezekiel903 Adjusted for purchasing power that isn't true. In terms of GDP PPP China is already the worlds' largest economy. Cos prices in China are lower.

This is the narrative the west likes to parrot in order to make itself look good, which its people happily go along with as it makes them feel good. There's a reason Africa still has these issues despite decades of such loans from the west - cos they were never the basis of said loans. See the Structural Adjustment Programs for an example of the mess you've caused there. The conditions imposed are economic, and tend to benefit western creditors and businesses more than anyone else.

A millennia old institution with vast differences across time and place is all just scrunched into one word and treated all the same. No it wasn't. What you did was much worse than the historical norm. With Congo a case in point, cos the old ways didn't result in the death of half of the population. Yours did.

@gentiannushi3343 Lol, you don't know history much. South Korea first developed under an autocracy, only becoming democratic later. Singapore is autocratic to this day, and was developed by one man - Lee Kuan Yew, who is still held in high regard. Rwanda meanwhile is currently experiencing its first taste of development, under an autocrat. And since you didn't guess which nation is was that carried out the largest poverty reduction in history, it's China. Which also had the second highest fdi inflows for decades btw, since that matters to you. For context, that was 3 times the US' whole population raised. While the US, despite being much richer, also has the highest poverty rate among its peers in the OECD (one of the 'perks' of being 'business friendly'). Point being that the world isn't as simple as your naive view of it would like it to be. There's many ways to build prosperity. I notice you've still failed to address your blatant mischaracterization. Talk about bringing one's own house in order, you haven't even brought your narrative in order.

Loan sharks lol! African nations themselves preferred to borrow from China over the IMF and the west. Cos that's how bad their previous 'loan sharks' were. The Chinese have been far better than the IMF was, hence why they still seek them out even as China itself is pulling back. Cos the last thing they want is a return to the IMF's pattern of loans. The average interest rate of these private loans is 5 percent, compared with 2.7 percent for loans from Chinese public and private lenders. If you're confused by that, it's cos the bulk of western loans are from private entities. Cos they hate borrowing from the IMF.

I merely pointed out that the conditions imposed by western loans were mostly economic policies rather than the humanitarian idealism that the OP tried to paint them as. I didn't ascribe any malice or evil agenda to them. Indeed the IMF itself has admitted that the Structural Adjustment Programs were a failure. I tend to think it more due to economic orthodoxy i.e. they thought they knew the secret to success, just like the OP does, but they were wrong. It didn't work. A similar failure happened with eastern Europe when they tried 'shock therapy'. My point was that the world isn't simple.
