Because it violates the principle of 'innocent until proven guilty'. In this case, you're killing based on association, not cos you know the guy has blood on his hands. There's a reason courts exist, and are independent of the police. Also, it's rather convenient for an aspiring dictator. Hell, you could argue the gangs already do this - so the govt. doing it is simply the biggest gang muscling out all the others.

The west has condescension and an overweening sense of moral superiority baked into its bones by now. They've been doing it ever since the days of 'white man's burden', only altering the rhetoric to move with the times. They can't stop. By now it's part of their own sense of identity and self-worth. With, of course, politicians stroking those egos for votes as needed. If they actually looked at the millions of dead and concluded that maybe the west isn't the best, they wouldn't know what to do with themselves.

Only simple in retrospect, not in anticipation. You have to make decisions in the present (like who to vote for) in anticipation of the future, not with established knowledge of it. And that's why we rely on signs and indicators. And the signs and indicators in this case are...not simple to read at all.

@xMorbidArtx Maybe, but I'd also be a far less neutral judge of things. Your argument is similar to arguing for victims of crimes to be the ones to pronounce judgment for them - yeah no, there's a reason why the standard globally is for justice to be done by neutral third parties i.e. judges with no bone to pick or conflict of interest in the case. I'm a much BETTER judge of this precisely because I'm not a victim of it. My head is less clouded by rage and grief, and thus able to assess things more rationally.

@TheMeepPlay The US already is allied with or supports plenty of dictators, so there's no reputation to lose there. Hell, besides their own multitude of wars, they even allow for their dictator friends to wage war too (for example, the KSA in Yemen).

@TheMeepPlay Oh and did you know that in the 1980's president Reagan generously supported the Salvadorian junta, quite possibly the most brutal, most criminal administration in the world at the time. Death squads, torture, murder, etc. They got their weapons and torture instruments from the US government. So you guys already have a track record over there.

@TheMeepPlay There's no conspiracies here - all of it is public knowledge that you can find reported in the mainstream media and compiled on Wikipedia. As for 40 years ago, dude - the Yemeni war is current. Afghanistan and Iraq are current. Syria is current. And so on. They may not be in El Salvador atm, but there's no evidence the US has turned away from interventionism. They're simply focused elsewhere atm.

It still happened, thanks to your democratically elected govt. (so how much opposition was there really?!) The govt. is yours - your people elected it, and hence are indirectly responsible for it. The only result of your cute protests was to make the people participating in them feel good about themselves. It's not like you overthrew the govt. to stop it. No, that had to wait until Reagan's time was done - which was already too late for thousands of Salvadorans. But worse still - the US STILL intervenes in countries all over the world, many decades later. Apparently it hasn't imbibed that lesson much. There's several hundred thousand dead in Afghanistan, and half a million to over a million in Iraq. There's also allies like Saudi Arabia waging war in Yemen. I can go on. Point being that the US shows no signs of having turned over a new leaf.

@gerrymandarin6388 Nice try trying to lump the blame onto Trump. The man was uncouth, but he's also the one who finally chose to give in on the ME misadventures. In any case, you seem to be taking this personally. The point is that the country as a whole hasn't changed much despite decades, which means the protests don't achieve much or there aren't enough people supporting them. As for Vietnam, the pullout followed the Tet Offensive, which was a showcase of exactly what the US is facing again now in Afghanistan - a war they can't win. It was also after they'd lost over 50,000 soldiers, more than in these more recent wars. But by the time they did leave, over 3 million Vietnamese lay dead, with enough poisoned people and land mines to keep killing long after they were gone. As Winston Churchill (someone responsible for plenty of death himself mind) eloquently put it, "You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else." As for Maduro, you really couldn't think of anyone better?! Maduro presides over a sham govt. whose elections are a joke. Try looking at France for a better comparison next time. Especially since they too have a long track record. Remember that Maduro is one leader, like Reagan was. The point is that America hasn't just pursued its aggressive and domineering foreign policy under just one president - it's done it again and again (especially in Latin America and the ME) over generations. Plenty of time to change, but the biggest change is simply how efficient it is at it (which is actually bad for the poor brown people who mostly die in them, since fewer American deaths means less pressure to end wars from Americans at home - which is why Iraq and Afghanistan have elicited less outrage than Vietnam did earlier).
