"But if a country like India can make democracy work" - as an Indian, I hate it when westerners take our democracy for granted today. Westerners also wrote off India's capability to remain a democracy when we gained independence - and they were NOT WRONG to do so. While some of it was driven by racism, there were also a lot of real GOOD REASONS to doubt Indian democracy would work out. And yet it did. That is a testament to India and Indians - we BEAT THE ODDS, but the odds were definitely stacked against us. Those predictions were not stupid - most places in situations similar to us FAILED to do that. India was one of the exceptions, the dark horse that upset the expected outcome. But now they take it for granted, as if it was always going to work out. It wasn't. It was hardly easy, and is still a struggle to this day (with out current PM also taking us in a more autocratic direction). We were even turned into a full autocracy briefly under Indira Gandhi.
Russia not being a democracy, insofar as it can be compared to India, does not make Russia a disappointment, it makes Russia TYPICAL. India as a democracy is not much of a counter imo.
Also I really don't like this kind of cultural / moral supremacy that underlies this kind of thinking, where nations are measured as successes or failures based on how similar they are to the west.
