America's massive military dominance was built by enormous national resources dedicated to the project thanks to two world wars that happened to not touch it the way they crippled the colonial powers. Russia did it despite its massive war losses. China hasn't dedicated the same level of commitment to its military...yet, since it doesn't face any equivalent military power in its local region. But you can bet if the Americans pushed them to it they'd soon build up just as impressively. They may lose the first big confrontation, but you'd only end up shifting their focus such that they'd thrash you in the second. Of course, the US doesn't care about this as much because "thrash" here still doesn't mean the American mainland would actually be threatened, just its power abroad. Would that all countries had the geographic gifts of the United States...
