  1. Partisans will back the nominee regardless. For those driven by issues, the biggest issue right now is "the establishment/mainstream sucks badly" and most of the pool of eligible voters are independents and not strongly affiliated with either party. Trump isn't aiming to be the GOP candidate he wants to be the GOP+Independent+Disenfranchised anti-hillary democrat candidate.
