  1. Voeris Of all the jRPGs to be released in that era (1993-1996) it is at least in the top three objectively. The most overrated IMO is probably Earthbound, that's only because I've been playing jRPGs since Dragon Quest and Earthbound to me felt like just another Dragon Quest game, only I didn't have a World Map.

  2. bezkoh83 Final Fantasy IX is my favorite as well, and XII got way too much heat but it is very good. If it sold more copies I'm pretty sure IX would have replaced VI on this list. It's the most balanced Final Fantasy by far.

  3. ***** IMO it went from underrated to overrated just by fanboy influence alone. I don't dislike EB. But CT is simply put, a better game. A lot of EB fanboys think its the best jRPG of all time and it simply is not. Chrono Trigger has Earthbound beat in character development, plot devices, sidequests, and most important of all in a jRPG, Replay Value. Earthbound has funny dialogue, amazing settings and a groundbreaking encounter system, but at the core it borrows from Zelda (find eight things before the final boss) and Dragon Quest (strictly turn based, each player has clear advantages and disadvantages, spell mechanics only exaggerating hitrates and not damage increases when you hit weaknesses) Chrono Trigger >>> Earthbound. And this isn't a new opinion of mine, I've been saying this since 1996 when I got both games. I WILL say this, for a jRPG published by Hal Labs/Nintendo Earthbound REALLY took me by surprise especially competing against the RPG giants that were Enix, Quintet, and Square back in 1995. So if this fact is considered I suppose it could be better than Chrono Trigger.

  4. ***** Also like I said I've been playing jRPGs since Ultima 3 so when I played both games I was also comparing my experience to all the other games I played before them.

  5. ***** Well it is to Lost Odyssey (which was released months after) as Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was to Final Fantasy IV. Blue Dragon was meant to be a beginner's jRPG. That is the General Consensus of it.

  6. Umm what? Only thing Chrono Cross does better is that it addressed the Quantum Physics in the time travel. For 1995, Chrono Trigger's gameplay was not dated. Compare it to Earthbound or Illusion of Gaia (the two other heavy hitters of jRPG in 1995 along with Final Fantasy VI) and it has them beat in terms of making the gameplay innovative yet keeping the tradition. Chrono Cross did not accomplish such things in 2000. Like Final Fantasy VIII, it tried to break away from too many elements that provided the foundation for jRPGs and because of that it took a big step backwards. I will say that the "good ending" for Chrono Cross is VERY satisfying, much more satisfying than most other games before or since.
